Converting a Numeric Result into a Human-Readable Value in Zabbix

Description

When monitoring certain aspects in Zabbix, you will be left with a simple numeric result such as '0' or '16'. We desire to have this in a more human-recognizable status, and we can do this by using Zabbix's Value Mapping functionality.

Example

HostNameInterval...Last Value
SCSM Management ServerCiresonPortal Application Pool State30s...3

How To

###Creating the Value Mapping
  1. Log into Zabbix
  2. Administration > General
  3. On the right hand side dropdown, go into Value Mapping
  4. Create a new Value Map
    1. In my example, I will create a mapping for Application Pool Status
      Mapping ValueMapped To
      3Working
      5Not Working
  5. Press Add to save your work

Mapping a Result

  1. Open up the edit page for the Item you wish to map
  2. In the Item configuration screen, take note of the Show Value dropdown. Default Value of this field is "As is"
  3. In the Show Value drop down, find the Performance counter you created earlier. In my example, I will choose Application Pool Status.
  4. Press Update to save your work

Confirmation

  1. Go into the Latest Data screen for the counter and Host you just modified. Confirm that enough time has elapsed since the last update so the value is mapped.

Example

HostNameInterval...Last Value
SCSM Management ServerCiresonPortal Application Pool State30s...Running (3)
